But what many people don't know is that Thoroughbreds have a lot more to offer than just their speed and athleticism. In fact, when Thoroughbreds are retired from racing, they can make wonderful riding and companion horses for people in all kinds of equestrian disciplines. There are many reasons why adopting an off-the-track Thoroughbred (OTTB) can be a great choice for horse owners. Here are just a few of the many benefits: 1. **Thoroughbreds are bred for athleticism** One of the things that makes Thoroughbreds so popular in the racing world is their incredible athleticism. Thoroughbreds are built for speed, with long, lean bodies and powerful legs that can propel them forward at breathtaking speeds. But even when they're not racing, Thoroughbreds retain their innate athleticism. This can make them excellent riding horses, especially for riders who are interested in jumping, eventing, or other athletic pursuits. 1. **Thoroughbreds are intelligent and willing** Another trait that Thoroughbreds are known for is their intelligence and their willingness to work. These horses are bred to be highly trainable, and they're typically very responsive to their riders' cues. This means that with the right training and handling, an OTTB can quickly become a skilled riding horse that's eager to learn new things. 1. **OTTBs are often well-trained** Contrary to popular belief, not all Thoroughbreds are high-strung, difficult horses. In fact, many OTTBs are very well-trained and well-behaved, thanks to the extensive training they receive during their racing careers. Many racehorse trainers take great care to ensure that their horses are well-handled and well-behaved, which can make the transition to a new career much easier for the horse. 1. **Adopting an OTTB can be a great way to save a life** Unfortunately, many Thoroughbreds are retired from racing before they've reached the end of their natural lifespans. When this happens, these horses are often at risk of being sent to slaughterhouses, where they'll be killed for their meat. By adopting an OTTB, you can give one of these horses a second chance at a happy, healthy life. Plus, you'll be helping to combat the practice of horse slaughter, which is a major problem in many parts of the world. 1. **OTTBs can excel in a variety of equestrian disciplines** While Thoroughbreds are most commonly associated with racing, they can actually excel in a wide variety of equestrian disciplines. Thoroughbreds are often great jumpers, thanks to their athleticism and their natural enthusiasm for the sport. They can also be excellent dressage horses, endurance horses, and even trail horses. If you're looking for a horse that can do it all, an OTTB might be just what you're looking for. 1. OTTBs can be affordable Finally, adopting an OTTB can be a great way to get a high-quality horse at an affordable price. Because there are so many Thoroughbreds available for adoption, the cost of purchasing one is often much lower than the cost of buying a horse from a breeder or a training stable. Plus, many OTTBs come with a lot of training and experience, which can save you time and money in the long run.
