From a 1971 Farm Jeep to a new UTV: Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Upgrades its Farm Operations

*Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare receives $21,100 from the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission’s Bettering the Horse Industry Fund for a new farm utility vehicle*

**RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO —** Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc. (CTA) is pleased to announce the receipt of **$21,100** from the Puerto Rico Government Gaming Commission through its Bettering the Horse Industry Fund (Order No. OACJ-NH-26-03), for the acquisition of a new all-terrain utility vehicle (UTV) for use at CTA’s farm in Río Grande.

The new UTV arrived just in time. CTA had been relying on a 1971 farm jeep donated by PAZ Transport to haul feed, supplies, and equipment across the property a vehicle that had been held together by determination and necessity for years. On the very last day the old jeep was in service, it broke down for good. The UTV arrived the same day. For the horses in CTA’s care, it was a seamless transition. For the CTA team, it was a moment that felt long overdue.

**A story of persistence**

The funding for this vehicle began as a proposal initiated with the support of Senator Marisitta Jiménez of Carolina in the fall of 2025. Like all allocations through the Bettering the Horse Industry Fund, the request moved through a multi-agency governmental review and approval process before the Board of Commissioners formally authorized the distribution in March 2026. The vehicle was acquired and put into service shortly after.

“This UTV has supported our day-to-day operations” said Alessandra Hernández Colón, President of CTA. “We are deeply grateful to the Board of Commissioners and to Senator Jiménez for championing this. Our horses and our team rely on this vehicle every single day, and it is a direct result of the government’s commitment to the welfare of retired racehorses in Puerto Rico.”

**How this fund works**

The Better the Horse Industry Fund is funded through Puerto Rico’s horse racing industry and administered by the Board of Commissioners. A portion of the fund is specifically designated for the general improvement of the horse racing industry, which includes supporting organizations like CTA that provide essential aftercare for retired racehorses. Funding proposals are submitted in the fall, reviewed through a multi-agency governmental process, and approved by the Board of Commissioners before disbursement.

**About Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare**

Founded in 2016, CTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating a 15-acre farm in Río Grande, Puerto Rico. CTA is the only organization in the Caribbean holding full accreditation from the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), the industry’s gold standard for aftercare quality and accountability. CTA’s programs include rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, adoptive placement, equine-assisted learning, and sanctuary services for retired racehorses.
