(San Juan, Puerto Rico)-The non-profit organization Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare (CTA), located in the municipality of Rio Grande, received the prestigious award 2024 Lavin Cup: The Equine Welfare Award of the AAEP
The award was given by the recognized American Association of Equine Practitioners and highlights the work of CTA members toward better understanding, care, and enforcement of laws and regulations related to horse care in Puerto Rico.
"For all the members we work with at CTA, a non-profit entity that only seeks to improve the conditions of horses in Puerto Rico, it is a great honor to have been recognized with this distinction. The work of CTA is to watch out for the good treatment of horses, help in the care of abandoned equines in the streets, as well as provide guidance on the laws that cover animal treatment in Puerto Rico. We appreciate this recognition and we will continue to work in favor of horses in Puerto Rico," said the executive director of the CTA, Kelley Stobie.
Since 2017, the CTA has cared for about 313 equines, of which 236 have been adopted by people on the Island, as well as in the states of the union. The entity receives up to 77 horses every year. The CTA, located on state road PR-186, kilometer 26.7 in the aforementioned municipality, is a non-profit organization that aims for the care, rehabilitation, and eventual adoption of Thoroughbred horses when they finish their competitive stage, which is only from 3 to 5 years. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) also recognized the ‘excellent’ state of the CTA facilities and that they represent ‘exceptional compassion for horses’.
The award will be presented during the AAEP annual convention scheduled for December 7-11 in the city of Orlando, Florida..
